Mabli and Lara Cargo

Mabli Cargo, 2 years old. Whippet x Fox Terrier x Staffy x Husky dog. Adopted from Pound Hounds. Waipa District-based.

Lara, a dedicated dog lover in Auckland, was instantly charmed by Mabli, a spirited rescue pup from Waipa District. Having grown up in the UK where rescue dogs were a cherished part of her family, Lara deeply missed their companionship since moving to Aotearoa.

Mabli’s captivating presence on Pound Hounds Rescue’s Facebook page immediately captured Lara’s heart, regardless of considering a smaller dog more suited for her apartment. Despite feeling an immediate bond with Mabli, Lara postponed the adoption process due to an upcoming trip to the UK.

Upon her return, Lara shared her desire to adopt Mabli with a colleague, leading to a surprising connection.

Her colleague, living in Cambridge, had ties to Mabli through her dog’s trainer, who fostered Mabli for Pound Hounds Rescue. Feeling a sense of destiny, Lara and her family swiftly applied to adopt Mabli, meeting her a week later and falling deeply in love with her spirited personality.

“Do it! Make sure you are ready and have enough time to give as it’s a big commitment, but there are so many pets out there that need a loving home and are so worth the extra bit of effort. The love you give, they give back 10 times over. They really do become a part of your family”.

A DNA test revealed Mabli’s diverse heritage, describing her as energetic and clever. Despite managing borderline hip dysplasia with a tailored diet and exercise, Mabli thrives in her apartment life, thanks to Lara’s commitment to ensuring she gets ample exercise.

Mabli’s intelligence shines through as she eagerly learns new tricks, including signaling when she needs to go outside using a button, a skill taught by her foster mom. Lara has further enriched their bond by introducing buttons for “play” and “hungry.”

If you’re thinking about adopting, Lara says, “Do it! Make sure you are ready and have enough time to give as it’s a big commitment, but there are so many pets out there that need a loving home and are so worth the extra bit of effort. The love you give, they give back 10 times over. They really do become a part of your family”.
